1988Warriors and Maidens (54 mins. This film examines the way history economics and religion combine to produce enduring gender codes governing the social relationships between men and women.

Sri Lanka

Footage originally shot in 1982 on half inch VHS videotape. Not suitable for broadcast but now very rare historic documents. Pioneered use of domestic video camera for lengthy takes in video.
There is 38 hours of original footage.

1992Guarani Land Rights (10 mins) Brazil.

The current sum of completed footage comprise 396.5 minutes
The Sri Lankan (1982) and Greek footage (1979) now have important World Heritage values. The Sri Lankan material is a unique ethnographic record of Sri Lankan exorcist rituals.

Teaching

1975-1989 University of Western Australia: Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology
Delivered a variety of courses in social anthropology and sociology including introduction to sociological thought, fieldwork methods and epistemology, medical anthropology, religion and ritual, Mediterranean peasants, the French School of sociology etc.
From 1976 major courses in visual anthropology and sociology, ethnographic film, ethnographic film production, film and the interpretation of cultures, gender codes and media representations.

Recognition

Past head of the national body of Australian Anthropologists and past President and Vice-President of the West Australian Anthropology Society. Elected member of the Association of Commonwealth Anthropologists, elected Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Elected Fellow of the Australian Anthropological Society as well as professional member of the West Australian Anthropological Association.

Exhibitions

Several exhibitions including Hiroshima Exhibition in 1978.

Research

Dr. Machin has done more fieldwork research in more countries than most other social scientists. He has spent over 38 years doing original fieldwork in Oxford, Greece, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Fiji, Brazil and Australia.

Dr Machin has consulted in work in organisational analysis and conflict resolution. Of late research and consultancy has been with indigenous peoples in Australia.

He has carried out major sociological research in educational aspirations in schools in Oxford, cultural codes, religion and child-rearing in Greece with pioneering publications and films in this area; He has also carried out sociological research on migration with Greek people in Melbourne

He studied and filmed traditional medicine and religion in India and Sri Lanka

Wide experience in public speaking and mass media
